Chinese 4

— last updated may 2022

I took Chinese 4 at Tufts in the Spring of 2022, after taking Chinese 3 in the Fall.

It’s probably also the last Chinese class I’ll take for now, after eight years of taking Chinese classes (three in middle school, four in high school, and this freshman year in college).

My professor for Chinese 4, Levente Li, was perhaps the best Chinese teacher I’ve had. I found his first class (on Zoom) to be quite rough, but I quickly warmed up to him.

He really emphasized the radicles that make up Chinese characters, and their histories and meanings. His thesis is that knowing why a character looks the way it does will help you understand the word and combine it to make other words.

His teaching was really interesting and it rekindled my interest in Chinese.
